Global Financial City Osaka Promotion Committee

Chairman Masayoshi Matsumoto (Chairman, Kansai Economic Federation)

Osaka is a core city in the Kansai region, Japan’s second largest economic zone, with an economic scale comparable to that of the Netherlands and Switzerland. In Osaka, industry, government and academia are working in unison to enhance its functions as an international financial city.

Osaka offers numerous business opportunities, one of the key elements of being an international financial city. In addition to a concentration of globally active companies in the life sciences and other fields, there are also a number of promising start-ups, particularly in the tech sector. In Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe, industry, government and academia are working together to build a start-up ecosystem, and Osaka has been selected as a ‘global hub city’ under the Japanese Government’s ‘Strategy for the Formation of a World-Class Start-up Ecosystem’.

Approximately 60% of Japanese Nobel Prize winners are associated with the Kansai region. The region is home to a concentration of universities and world-class research institutions that produce outstanding human resources, as well as a climate that places importance on originality and a spirit of inquiry into the unknown. In addition, it’s active in various exchanges and challenges to advanced initiatives. In view of the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, which is based on the concept of a ‘testing ground for the future society’, an environment is being created to facilitate innovative demonstration experiments by a wide range of parties.

The Kansai International Airport, which has the highest number of arrivals and departures from Asian countries among Japanese airports, is the gateway not only to Osaka/Kansai but also to the rest of Asia in Japan.

Osaka is not only attractive as a business development destination, but also as a place to live and as a tourist destination due to its proximity to the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara, as well as numerous world cultural heritage sites and other historical, traditional and cultural centres.

Based on the “Global Financial City OSAKA Strategy” formulated in March 2022, industry, government, and academia will actively work together to further enhance the attractiveness of OSAKA as an international financial city. We sincerely hope that you will choose Osaka/Kansai as a place to invest and expand your business.
